Howard County Maryland Dentist Walter M. Mazzella, D.D.S., M.A.G.D.

Dr. Mazzella is a native of Washington, D.C. He attended college at Georgetown University. After his undergraduate education, he earned his dental degree from the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Next, he completed a rigorous dental residency program at the University of Florida.

He worked for six years in Washington, D.C., at a dental practice focusing on cosmetic dentistry. In 2001, he opened his own dental practice in the Waverly Woods Village Center in Howard County. Dentistry runs in his family. His father has practiced dentistry for over 50 years and was chairman of Periodontics at the Georgetown University Dental School.

In 2001, Dr. Mazzella earned a fellowship from the Academy of General Dentistry after completing a rigorous exam and hundreds of continuing education hours. In 2010, he earned a Mastership degree from the Academy of General Dentistry, signifying advanced expertise in all disciplines of dentistry.

Experience and Continued Education

Dr. Mazzella is an active member of the American Dental Association. From 2008-2009, he was President of the Howard County Dental Association. He also serves on the Howard County Board.

In 2012, Dr. Mazzella was awarded The Concept of Complete Care Dentistry Award from The Dawson Academy. He completed a series of courses focusing on the comprehensive diagnosis and treatment of dental conditions, specifically TMJ abnormalities, severe tooth wear, bite problems, and splint therapy.

Since 2013 he has been an active member of the Dawson Academy Study Club in Washington, DC, to include his advanced treatment planning education.

In 2014, Dr. Mazzella earned a Fellowship from the International Dental Implant Association. He completed advanced training in Dental Implants and Bone Grafting procedures. In addition, in May 2014, he volunteered on a charitable missionary trip to the Dominican Republic to treat patients needing dental implant and bone graft surgeries.

Dr. Mazzella has volunteered in the Maryland Donated Dental Services program for many years. He has donated his dental services for patients in his office and has spent countless hours working at the Mission of Mercy clinics, which provide free dental care to the indigent in our community.

Since 2001, he has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Columbia-Patuxent and has held several Board positions in the club. He has volunteered his time and resources to local charities and funded international projects. He served as the President of the Rotary Club of Columbia-Patuxent from 2020-2021.

Mission Trips

Mission of Mercy, July 2018

Several hundred volunteer dental professionals provided free dental care during a two day clinic in Southern Maryland in July 2018. Approximately 600 patients a day were screened and treated.

Mission of Mercy, September 2017

Maryland State Dental Association sponsors the Mission of Mercy Donated Dental Clinic at the University of Maryland, XFinity Center basketball arena on September 8, 2017. 96 Dental chairs, 250 volunteer dentists, $1.2 million donated dentistry, treating thousands of patients for their dental needs.

Missionary Trip to the Dominican Republic, May 2014

The International Dental Implant Association hosts 30 hours of advanced implant and bone grafting surgeries in the Dominican Republic in May 2014.
